The wonder-working icons of the Holy Virgin de Teophilact Marinakis, archimandrite Teophilact Marinakis, archimandrite
The wonder-working icons of the Holy Virgin

Translated from Greek by Zenaida Ana Maria Luca

There are many wonder-working icons of the Holy Virgin, both small and large: in the fields, mountains, valleys, on beaches, islands, in monasteries, scenting everything around them. Their fragrance is always accompanied by the sound of faithful Christians’ chants, dedicated to the one “full of grace”, the very foundation of the “mystery of devotion” (I Timothy 3:16), and the beginning of the “old and true will of God”.
We believe that by reading these accounts on the wonder-working icons of the Holy Virgin, any Christian God-loving soul will rejoice, will derive a great spiritual profit and, above all, will learn. They will urge everyone to eagerly imitate the virtue of the Most Pure, for, as St. John Chrysostom said, “to venerate the saints is to imitate them.”
They will comfort readers when “the many sorrows overwhelm them”, will arouse their wish to visit the holy places where “the Holy Virgin’s feet walked”, and the wish to prostrate and kiss her wonder-working icons, revealed by divine signs.
Thus they will receive the icons’ grace, as well as the “mercy and compassion” of the Mother of God, bountifully granted to all who fervently invoke her honourable name. (Archimandrite Teofilact Marinakis)
