Benjamin Fedcenkov, metropolitan
The meanings and depths of the Lord’s Prayer
Translated from Russian by Boris Buzila
Until recently, this book was known only to the monks of Pechersk Lavra in Pskov, where a single typewritten copy was kept in an elder’s cell. The author, Metropolitan Benjamin (Fedcenkov) (1880 – 1961), one of the important hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, dedicated his long, harsh life to serving God, His Holy Church as well as the faithful.
The Providence had his life span the terrible years of hardships for both the Church and Russia at large. He witnessed and took part in countless events of recent history, knew the sorrows of exile as well as the joys of rediscovering his homeland. Throughout his life, from all encounters and conversations, he gained wisdom that he generously shared with his readers.
His books have been fortunately preserved, though many may still await being discovered. All these writings are imbued with fervent, working faith in God and the Virgin’s and saints’ intercession. He can speak of the things “in the highest” in plain, heartfelt, convincing words.
Metropolitan Benjamin spent his late life in reclusion at Pechersk Lavra in Pskov. The elders there can still recall his sermons that brought tears of joy and humility in their eyes. God had granted him insight into the deepest mysteries of His Kingdom, as well as the gift of making his readers and listeners understand them and open their hearts.
