The Woman and Her Problems: the Orthodox Psychiatrist’s Perspective by Avdeev, Dmitri, dr.; Besedina, Ioana Avdeev, Dmitri, dr.; Besedina, Ioana
The Woman and Her Problems: the Orthodox Psychiatrist’s Perspective

Translation from Russian by Eugeniu Rogoti & Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas

Third Edition

Issued: 2011

Love is the religious, devout perception of the concrete being; it is seeing a divine principle in the beloved person. Any genuine love, irrespective of the way in which it is mentally perceived, is essentially a religious feeling. Erotic love, with all its power and its importance in one’s life, is at best only an incipient form of the genuine love, in the sense described above; we might call it a sweet-smelling, fragile flower, that blossoms on the stem of love, but is not its root…
Genuine marriage is the way of turning this erotic love into a religious one. It is precisely in this process that the “Mystery of marriage” lies. Many contemporary families lead a random life, refusing God’s help, God’s blessing, and face many psychological and moral problems, as well as much instability…
A family cannot establish good relationships without God! It is only by receiving God, loving each other in their love for their Creator, that family members can attain true happiness and a fulfilled life. Life demonstrates this and history proves it. Through faith, repentance, common prayer, a Christian upbringing of children and mutual love, the spouses advance towards their main goal: the Kingdom of God. (V. Frankl)
