The War and the Bible de Velimirovich, Nikolai, St. Velimirovich, Nikolai, St.
The War and the Bible

Translated from Serbian by Adrian Tănăsescu Vlas
Second edition revised

The cause of war is people’s forsaking God and His law. It is people’s forsaking God and their unworthiness in times of peace, that causes war. When people deserve war, when the reasons for war accumulate, then war breaks up whether they want it or not. Just as those who drink water infested with typhus bacteria inevitably become ill, so those who have forsaken God and dwell on thoughts, desires and deeds unacceptable to God, attract the disease of war, and war becomes inevitable. As long as people wage war against God through their thoughts, desires and deeds, they dream of peace in vain. Whether they want it or not, war is bound to occur where its seeds have been sown. The war against God, be it overt or covert, inevitably leads to war among people. For “there is no peace for the wicked,” says the Lord (Isaiah 48, 22). Today we speak of peace more than ever before, while peoples prepare for war more than ever before. Such hypocrisy can hardly be spared from punishment by war.
