The Therapy of Mental Disorders
Translated from French by Marinela Bojin
Anxiety and depression affect more than two hundred million persons worldwide, and the remedy proposed is most often than not a chemical one. Whereas some of these cases are doubtlessly of somatic origin, which justifies such treatment, most of them are generally acknowledged as manifestations of the so-called „mal de vivre". In other words, they reveal the existential suffering, which classic psychiatry is unable to cure.
Such troubles clearly pertain to the spiritual realm, which the Holy Fathers constantly keep in mind. Their spiritual experience and the remedies the Fathers provide are worth considering, since irrespectively of the social context and time period, they reach the universal side of human existence: every man’s painful struggle to find inner peace and a meaning of life, to relate oneself and one’s deeds to the true set of values. Many psychiatrists and psychologists admit that the decline of these values today contributes to the increasing number of mental disorders, mainly anxiety and depression.
