The Sunday Kinonikon During the Post-Byzantine Period (1453-1821). Liturgics and Music
The present volume addresses the repertoire of one of the most important compositional classes of Byzantine and post-Byzantine music: the Sunday Kinonikon (“Praise the Lord in the highest, hallelujah”, Psalm 148:1). The seven chapters of the book render the liturgical-musical outline of this creation throughout the Turkish rule period (1453-1821), thus providing a coherent image of a musical genre which has always held an essential place within the Byzantine liturgy.
The secondary aim of this work, manifest especially in the final chapter, was to propose a new method for investigating the Oriental monodical expression, a method designed to facilitate access to old musical creations of the Byzantine world.
