Saint Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow
The Orthodox Catechism
Translated from Russian by Gheorghiþã Ciocioi
The Orthodox Catechism of Saint Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow (1782-1867) is reckoned as the most comprehensible exposition of the Orthodox Faith in the last 200 years. This can be accounted by the over 120 editions the book has known since 1823 till now, at which can be added ather numerous editions in different languages.
Saint Hierarch Philaret (Drozdov) war the most remarkable personality of Russian theology of the 19th century. In a letter addressed to Russian Synod by the Patriarch of Constantinople, in 1867, Metropolitan Philaret is called “a pillar, a light and a schoolmaster of the whole Orthodoxy”. Rector of Theological Academy of Sankt Petersburg, teacher of Greek and Hebrew, he was involved in the translation and spreading of the Bible in Russian Language - until that time it being available only in Slavonic. The brilliant crowning of these missionary efforts, Saint Philaret’ Catechism represented and still represents for the millions of Orthodox believers a trustworthy groundwork for discerning the redemptive truths of the Faith.
