The Martyrdom of a Defender of Orthodoxy. Conferences of Serbia

Translated from Russian by Ana Pompaș

In the evening of November 19, 2009, in the Holy Apostle Thomas Church of Moscow, the 35-year-old Fr. Daniel Sysoiev was killed after a prodigious missionary activity, that converted to Orthodoxy over 80 Muslims and around 500 Neo-protestants. The many death threats he had received from Islamic extremists make us believe he was killed precisely because of his preaching of Christ’s word among Muslims. We mention that one of his great-grandfathers was a Tartar and a Muslim cleric.
PATRIARCH CYRIL OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA: “Father Daniel was well-known to the Orthodox Christians, not only in the capital city, but also in many other eparchies… His firm missionary position and his inspirational image are deeply imprinted upon the conscience of those seeking the path to the Church, due to the force and depth of his faith and hope in the Lord. God called His devout servant to Him, allowing him to become a confessor of faith and a martyr for the cause of evangelic mission.”
JULIA SYSOIEVA, FATHER DANIEL’S WIFE: “The Father was interested in everything, he would attempt to grasp the ineffable… He dedicated much of his energy to missionary activity. One of his dreams was to create missionary parishes within diasporas throughout the world, and to preach Orthodoxy to people of other religions. This dream had started to come true, with the contribution of the missionaries he prepared… Muslims from Azerbaidjan and Dagestan would come to him to be baptized… Father Daniel wanted to teach the baptized Muslims how to be missionaries, so that they might preach Christ to their peoples… He envisaged a universal Christianity.”
