The Educational Ideal in Christian Pedagogy: St. Clement of Alexandria, St. John Chrysostom, Blessed Augustine
Beyond the subordinate ideals concerning happiness, peace and social order in this world, the Christian educational ideal seeks to transcend life’s limitations imposed by death by means of man’s synergy with divine grace. Unbounded love for the world and worldly life, without relating it to its Creator, is actually love for death.
Created in the image of God and intended to reach His likeness, man has been set into the world as a master of the created universe. The path towards likeness to God, a path of inner freedom, is the path followed by any Christian pedagogical ideal. The ways to approach God are diverse, but they all lead to the same peak.
From the point of view of Christian pedagogy, there are immediate ideals, relating to the attempt to create a better and fairer world here, on earth, as well as an absolute educational ideal, namely transcending death. Thus Christian pedagogy is par excellence a pedagogy of life, a pedagogy of resurrection.
