Gheorghiu, Virgil
The Condotierre
Translation from French by Gheorghiţă Ciocioi
Published: 2011
Conceived in the manner of ancient tragedy, under the patronage of the Condotierre, the Most Holy Mother of God, the Mother of the poor and the persecuted in the magnificent Vrancea region, the novel illustrates the daily oppression practiced by the regimes of eastern countries behind the Iron Curtain. As it often happens in Gheorghiu’s texts, the political plot – the starting point of the novel is the murder of which a monk is accused, committed on the National Day, when the invaders turned leaders of the Romanian Penitentiary Republic, forced the entire people to marches demonstrating their loyalty to the regime – turns into a kind of mystery, in the religious sense, maintaining throughout the book a metaphysical and poetic reflection on human condition.
With The Condotierre – a novel with several French editions, and translated into tens of languages upon its publication – Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu, the priest-novelist, priest-poet, confirms his status as one of the major contemporary authors.
