The Church Fathers on the Theotokos
Anthology compiled by hieromonk Benedict Stancu
I do not wish to be an angel in order to speak of the Mother of our Lord. I want to speak as a humble man, so as to really feel the love and mercy of the Theotokos. I think the Mother of God is more comfortable among the weak, troubled and oppressed people, than among angels. The Mother of God is always selfless, she always suffers, and I believe she even pleads against divine justice, defending the weaklings who call for her help. She is exceedingly loving and does not discriminate even against the evil or callous ones.
No one, however sinful, will be condemned if the Mother of God protects them. She is generous even towards those who, out of indifference or ingratitude, seldom call upon her. She is so much the more generous towards those who constantly beg for her help. They are not only loved more, but even served by her.
The Mother of God gains our hearts. I wish I had all the hearts of saints and angels, in order to love the Mother of God. However much the angels of heaven and earth love her, from all their hearts, and with all their saintliness, they will never equal her love for them. (Father Arsenie Papacioc)
