The Cappadocians by Meredith, Anthony Meredith, Anthony
The Cappadocians

Translated from English by Fr. Constantin Jinga

In the year 313, Emperor Constantine the Great legalized Christian worship throughout the Roman Empire. The following period was marked by the flourishing of Christian thought and culture, within a society still entrenched in the ancient conceptions on life. The Cappadocian Fathers were at the core of this unprecedented process, each of them wondrously merging classic culture and Christian theology.
The Cappadocians represents a good introduction to the life and work of the three outstanding personalities of late 4th century: Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory of Nazianz and Saint Gregory of Nyssa. Together, these men constitute a major force in the process of apology and development of Christian Orthodoxy, following the Nicea Synod. Individually, each of them proves to be a remarkable theologian. The present work emphasizes the main aspects in the theological contribution of each.
