Nectarius of Aegina, St.
Ten Lenten Homilies
Translated from Greek by Parascheva Grigoriu
Man, created in the image of God, was made as an intelligent and autonomous being, in order to represent God on earth, do His will which is written in man’s heart, and turn God’s will into his own law. The purpose of his making was that the creature know and recognize its Maker and Creator. It was to reach for God. To praise God. The creature was intended to extol its divine Creator in full awareness. Thus, man’s independence, intelligence and moral freedom were granted to him in order to fulfill the very reason for his existence, his great mission to reunite heaven and earth, without leaning towards right or left but walking the straight path, doing only good, which is also the natural, innate tendency. Otherwise, once man strays from the right course, he loses freedom and becomes like animals deprived of reason. Man is morally free as long as he does not depart from good and insofar he identifies his own will with the divine will; once he departs from the right course he becomes morally unfree, his freedom is a false one, and his fallen state testifies to his false freedom.
