Suffering is not God’s will
Romanian translation by Marinela Bojin
One of the main aims of the present book is to demonstrate that neither theology, nor anthropology or Christian spirituality necessarily lead to a justification or validation of suffering. On the contrary, they offer the grounds to deem it outrightly evil. According to St. Isaac the Syrian’s assertion, „God does not want us to suffer” and He has never wanted it. Christ came among us not in order to bring us suffering, but to deliver us from it; while suffering is impossible to overcome in this world, it may still be mastered with spiritual means, by leading a Christian life, with Christ’s grace. The words by which Apostle Paul??/ St. John Chrysostom defies death may be now applied to suffering: „O suffering, where is thy sting? O suffering, where is thy victory?”
Chriastianity is essentially not the religion of suffering, but that of happiness. For it was happiness that God intended for man in creating him, and it is bliss that He meant for man in eternity.
