St. Simeon the New Theologian and the Orthodox Tradition
Translated from English by Ioana Stoicescu& Maria-Magdalena Rusen
In the 10th century – a century of unsurpassed glory and power for Byzantium, when the East bows again before the emperors of Constantinople and the West trembles with the fear of the Bulgaroctonus – a magnificent star appears in the sky of Orthodoxy: Simeon, known as “the New Theologian.” His testimony to the sight of divine light disrupted the routine of the times’ church life. Fervently loved by some, bitterly opposed by others, he is one of the great figures of the Church’s mystical experience.
What does “the New Theologian” mean? How could such a personality appear in the Byzantine world? Where does he come from, and which is his place in Orthodox spirituality?
The present book attempts to answer some of these questions, and ascertain St. Simeon’s place in Orthodoxy, examine the foundations of his thought, and highlight those characteristics of Tradition that determined his theology.
