Asterios Gerostergios
St. Photios the Great
Translated from English by Marius Popescu
St. Photios the Great (820-891), Patriarch of Constantinople, was a great Orthodox spiritual and intellectual leader, the most important of his time, and truly a holy man. Yet his life and works are far from having received the attention they deserve. As a result, he has been seriously misunderstood and even maligned in the West. In a clear, concise and scholarly manner, Fr. Gerostergios succeeds in re-establishing the lofty Christian character of St. Photios, the purity of his life and his many-sided greatness. The text of the book is enhanced by an addition at the end of beautiful hymns, taken from the service in honor of St. Photios. These give vivid expression to the profound esteem which the Orthodox have for this illustrious Church Father.
