Jeremiah the Recluse
Spiritual Medicines Collected from Around the World
Translated from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
Saint Jeremiah the Recluse:
He was the closest friend of St. Inocentius of Cherson. He was the one who tonsured into monasticism St. Teophane the Recluse and Metropolitan Macarius Bulgakov, the renowned church historian. He enjoyed the love and trust of Saints Philaret of Moscow and Philaret of Kiev. The prayers he composed became part of the daily rule of prayer of Blessed John Krestiankin, the great spiritual director of contemporary Russia. Finally, he was one of those wise hierarchs who radiated not only the cold light of erudition, but the warmth of simplicity and humility; he was not only a “director of faith” but also an “epitome of meekness”.
His modesty prevented him from publishing his numerous volumes of homilies and teachings, which begin only now to be printed in Russia. We offer the first Romanian translation from the ascetical legacy of this outstanding personality, a spiritual “guidebook” evincing not pedantry and academic dryness, but the genuine serenity and joy of living in the Holy Spirit.
