Praises to the Holy Virgin’s Assumption
Translation from Old Greek by Parascheva Grigoriu
This festal microanthology presents, without any claim to exhaustivity, a selection of some of the most beautiful Praises to the Holy Virgin’s Assumption. It brings together Byzantine writers of the golden age of Byzantine rhetorics (7th- 11th centuries), from the famous Homilies on the Assumption by St. John Damascene, St. Theodore the Studite, Bishop John Euchaites, to a brief text of the post-Byzantine period, written by the Bishop Elias Miniatis. Intended to mark the feast of Virgin’s Assumption, this volume presents the Empress of heaven and earth passing into the eternal life, as an intercessor and guarantor of all people’s resurrection and salvation. The Virgin’s tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, testifies to the resurrection of the entire mankind, therefore the feast of the Assumption of Mother of God is the counterpart of the Paschal feast of our Saviour’s Resurrection, truly deserving the title of „feast of feasts."
