Translation from modern Greek, introductory study and notes: rev. dr. Gabriel Mândrilă
Edited by Laura Mândrilă
Alexandros Papadiamandis, the writer in „the shadow of Mount Athos” (Skiathos island), the symbol of modern Greek Christian literary conscience, also dubbed the „saint of letters”, is one of most widely read and the most beloved authors of the last two centuries’ modern Greek literature.
„Papadiamandis’ life, as well as his sensitivity in approaching people, has a hesychast, Philokalic quality; his entire personality smells like incense, and this Athonite scent streams forth from his heart, and pervades his writings. His texts are imbued with the myrrh of prayer and of Church liturgy, and his ethos is latreutic, like chants”.
Hierotheos Vlachos, Metropolitan of Náfpaktos
