Koulomzin, Sophie
Our Church and Our Children
Translation from English by Doina Rogoti
The Orthodox Church is facing challenges today. It has to discover an approach to the religious education, grounded in the entire Church tradition. At the same time, Christian education aims to educate persons. Be they children, teenagers or adults, it must approach each individual in a personal manner: speak their language, understand and share their needs and interests, love them the way they are. The process of Christian education must be a process of growth – each one’s personal experience, a gradual change concerning the person in its entirety. It is a huge mission and challenge, which can only be met if we fully assume the life of the Church.
Thus, the educational activity of the Church must be threefold: establishing a liturgical life in parishes, addressing parents and family, and educating children. None of these aspects can exist and grow separately. This is the inclusive mission of the Orthodox Church today.
SOPHIE KOULOMZIN (1903-2000), for a long time a professor at “St. Vladimir” Orthodox Theological Seminary of Crestwood, NY, is one of the most prominent figures of 20th century Christian pedagogy. Her books, including the present one, are already among the classic texts of Orthodox religious education.
