Orthodox Psychiatry: Questions and Answers. A Dialogue with an Orthodox Psychiatrist
Translated from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
Published 2011
The only right way to healing spiritual illness is provided by the Orthodox faith, repentance and leading one’s life according to the commandments of God.
God allows illness in order to test one’s faith, or even as a reward for those who accept its hardships and endure them for the sake of God and eternal life. Thus, depending on the spiritual background of a disease, its meaning is defined accordingly.
We must say that mental disoredrs are only a particular case of harm afflicting human nature, which has been assailed by sin since Adam and Eve. The person suffering from mental disorders is neither the best, nor the worst of us. It is a person carrying a cross. And we must remember the words of St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, who used to say: “the blind, the leper, the insane, the infant, the criminal, must be granted the honor due to the image of God. Why do you condemn their shortcomings and deficiencies? Mind your own lack of love.”
