Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, Saint Ephrem the Syrian
On the Priesthood
Translation, introduction, and notes by Rev. Dumitru Fecioru
Priesthood, the healing scince of souls, intends to wing the soul. Its main purpose is to pull the soul out of the world and to offer it God; to make it guard God’s image, in case it still has, and if it’s in danger of loosing it, priesthood must show the soul how to keep it for itself; if the soul spoils God’s image, priesthood must bring the soul to its early state. The priesthood intends to bring Christ, through the Holy Spirit, into people’s hearts.
Finally, priesthood’s major purpose is to make man, who belongs to the group from bellow, god and participant in the happiness from above. (Saint Gregory of Nazianzus)
