John Damascene, st.
On the Holy Trinity. On the Trisagion Hymn
Translation from Greek, introduction and notes by Parascheva Grigoriu
The treatises compiled in this volume illustrate St. John Damascene’s conception on the Holy Trinity. The conceptual unity of these treatises is self-evident, as for St. John Damascene, the Holy Trinity dogma cannot be separated from its doxology. The Trisagion hymn intoned by the seraphim covertly asserts the mystery of the Trinity of Hypostases, by a numerical revelation: „ Holy, holy, holy …” while also asserting the unity of divine essence: „… Lord of Sabaoth. Heaven and earth are full of His glory”. What the Seraphim express covertly, is openly revealed by the Person of the Incarnate Son: the Incarnate Christ is the Revealer of the Holy Trinity, and through Him the coessential Trinity is made known to people.
