Larchet, Jean-Claude
On Christian Love
Translated by Marinela Bojin
Published in 2010
The Christian does not love for material gain or profit; the Christian will love even when, in exchange for this love, he receives only troubles and nuisance. The Christian will love before he is loved, he loves when he is not loved, he loves even when the loved one hates him. This is why the Holy Fathers say that love for one’s enemies is perfect love, because it is truly generous and expects no reward.
Love is total abnegation. Christian love is total self-denial. It is akin to humility. Only he who forgets and forsakes himself, can truly love his neighbour.
As for ourselves, let us examine our conscience to see whether we do love Christ and our fellow people; if we do not, let us repent and struggle to love them.
