Nativity Homilies de Proclus of Constantinople, st Proclus of Constantinople, st
Nativity Homilies

Translation from old Greek by Parascheva Grigoriu
Afterword, appendix: Fr. Jan Nicolae

By asserting the duality of natures within the inextricable unity of Christ’s Person, St. Proclus’ Homilies open the way for the Chalcedonian Christological issue. The terminological and dogmatic intuitions thereby expressed would provide the key arguments brought in the Council of Ephesus (431) and that of Chalcedon (451). The Homilies on the Nativity of the Lord also establish the theological and Christological grounds for the Marian cult, by instituting the term “Theotokos” as an essential attribute of the Mother of God, against Nestorius’ Judaizant contestations. They allow the synthesis of the two 5th century Christologies – the Antiochian and the Chalcedonian ones – within a reconciliation work unique in the history of the Church.

„The Sun of Righteousness has risen today to outshine the old sun. I have been freed from darkness and the brightness of these rays bedazzles me; the day is born anew to me, and I am seized by fear. The Nativity delights me and thrills me. I now see a new spring arising and the old concerns abolished; I have seen the birth of a Child and the heavenly powers descending to glorify Him.”
