Greceanu, Olga
Meditations on the Gospels
A visionary painter of deep Orthodox spirituality, Olga Greceanu (1980-1978) was one of the most appreciated artists of the interwar period. Beside contributing to exhibitions in our country and abroad, which gained her considerable recognition due to her neo-Byzantine style, Olga Greceanu also painted churches, authored a monumental Orthodox Christian Dictionary, whose manuscript she donated to the Romanian Patriarchate, wrote art books and profound religious meditations. She was a fervent member of the “Burning Bush” group and close to archimandrite Benedict Ghius, to whom she entrusted her manuscripts on biblical themes. She was the only woman to preach in the church, by the appointment of Patriarch Justinian Marina.
Why is she virtually unknown to the general public and especially the youth, despite her important activity and the fact that only three decades had passed since her death in 2008? Even during her lifetime, as the communist regime became increasingly authoritarian, Olga Greceanu was marginalized, deemed undesirable both due to her origin and especially her overt religious propaganda. Art history books ceased to mention her, the volumes written by her were withdrawn, her paintings in public institutions were whitewashed, and at her manor in Balteni, Dambovita county, the walls she had painted were demolished and her books were burned. Thus Olga Greceanu sank into oblivion.
The manuscripts of her sermons, heretofore hidden, are now released for the first time to substitute for the ephemeral oral communication. The present volume reveals the power and ability of Olga Greceanu to give a modern interpretation to the Gospel’s divine message.
