Letters de Cyprian, St., Bishop of Carthage Cyprian, St., Bishop of Carthage
Letters

Translated from Latin by Prof. Ion Diaconescu, Prof. Ovidiu Pop
Published 2011

St. Cyprian of Carthage was one of the prominent personalities of the Christian Church, during the first half of the third century. He came from a wealthy, distinguished family. He received a good education, studying rhetoric, which he later taught. He had a rich and most likely wanton life, until he heard of the saintliness of Cecil, a Christian priest, sought him and then adhered to Christ’s teachings and His Church. As a bishop, St. Cyprian led the Christian community of Carthage, and in fact the entire Roman Africa, during very harsh times. He faced two great persecutions, then the plague of 252- 254 – of which Roman authorities as well as the pagans accused Christians – heresies, and invasions of desert tribes. He was martyred during the persecution of Valerian.
“Cyprian is maybe the most natural in his correspondence. It is a document of the utmost importance. Cyprian is highly aware of both the rights and the duties of a bishop… His correspondence proves he not only formulated generous notions, but also acted on the principles he had established. He is consistent in his actions as well as letters. An innate leader, he was able to lead a unitary life, to join firmness and gentleness, prudence and enthusiasm, caution and ability. This action man is also a mystic, he is himself both in prayer and in work…” (Adalbert Hammann, Church Fathers)
