Mondzain, Marie-Jose
Image, Icon, Economy. The Byzantine Origins of Contemporary Imaginary
Translated from French by Mariuca and Adrian Alexandrescu
Marie-Jose Mondzain is a Doctor of Philosophy, director of studies at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, and a writer. For many years, her research has focussed on image, which she investigates in all its manifestations: pictorial, photographic, cinematographic, televised image. All her writings are incursions, with different starting points, into the same fabulous, still arcane realm of the image: „What renders image enigmatic is its lack of mystery – the author says. In it, the invisible is not hidden, but manifest. Its enigma is not a secret and is not rooted in any occult or restricted knowledge. It is the enigma of any living body inhabited by a voice (…) Christian thought has the major privilege of having expressed for the first time the idea of our bodily intimacy with the imaginal voice, hence with the imaginary”.
