How to provide an Orthodox upbringing. 300 wise pieces of advice from saints and spiritual directors
Translation from Russian by Adrian Tănăsescu Vlas
Published 2011
It is not engendering that makes one a father, it is not child-bearing that makes one a mother, but sound upbringing given to one’s children makes one a parent. (St. John Chrysostom)
Parental love is sacred, but we must not forget that it comes second, after marital love. Passionate love for one’s children must not prevail over spouses’ feelings instead of strengthening and elevating them. Children must be reared in love, but they must first witness the love between mother and father, and only secondly enjoy parental love. If parents’ mutual feelings have withered, the child’s heart may grow cold and unable to love, however tender is the mother or however caring is the father. (Metropolitan Vladimir of Central Asia)
The one who has given birth only gives life, but the one who has brought up and educated a child gives a good life. We are indebted to the parents who gave us birth, but we are so much more indebted to the parents who gave us a sound upbringing and taught us about faith, because those giving birth are parents in the earthly life, while those who educate their children in faith give them eternal Life. Whoever keeps and teaches these commands will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:19). (St. Tikhon of Zadonsk)
