How to Overcome Pride. Teachings for Pride Healing, According to the Holy Fathers
Translated from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
“In order to become aware of your pride, in order to feel it, see how you feel when those around you do something you do not like, against your will. If the first to arise in you is not the intention to correct that error gently, but discontent and anger, then you’ll know that you are proud, and deeply so.
If even the slightest failures sadden and burden you, so that not even the thought of divine providence that guides us can comfort you, then you’ll know that you are proud, and deeply so.
If you are fervent towards your own needs, but cold towards the needs of the others, then you’ll know that you are proud, and deeply so.
If you are glad to witness the distress of others, even if they are your enemies, and you are sad to see the unexpected happiness of your fellow, then you’ll know that you are proud, and deeply so.
If you are offended by mild criticism of your shortcomings, but you are delighted by praise for qualities you do not have, then you’ll know that you are proud, and deeply so.”
The present book is an anthology of the writings of the Holy Fathers and some of the best known spiritual directors of modern Russia, concerning the main cause of unrest and anxiety: pride.
