Anthony of Sourozh, Metropolitan
God and Man
Translated from English by Luminita Irina Niculescu
Published 2011
If you sit in a room and say: “God is here, with me, by my side” you will shortly begin to wonder how to fill your time with an activity that might relieve our impatience. At first you will feel wonderful, for you are tired and sitting is restful; the silence imparts a sense of peace. Very true – but if you go beyond this natural repose and rest, and attempt to remain close to God after your human body has relaxed, you will find it very difficult not to ask: “What now? What shall I tell God? How do I address Him? He is silent. Is he still here or not? How am I to reconcile His slience, or absence, with my restlessness?” Therefore, one of the first things one must realize is the importance of being with God, without taking any action. Although this may not seem pious, if you reach that peace called “hesychia” by the Eastern Fathers, you will be able to achieve great things in your life. (Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh)
