Formation of Christian Theology. Vol. 1 The Way to Nicaea by Fr. John Behr Fr. John Behr
Formation of Christian Theology. Vol. 1 The Way to Nicaea

Translated from English by Mihail G. Neamtu

Tradition, like canon, is not a paralyzing constriction, but a stimulus for fruitful reflection, requiring us to think creatively; it is a challenge, a task, and, ultimately, liberating. The tradition within which this book is written is that of the Orthodox Church. That certain writers, the Fathers of the Church (though not exclusively), and certain councils, the Ecumenical Councils, have been chosen rather than others, is evidence of this. Yet, as I hope to show, what we will find in the Fathers studied here is a reflection on and within the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is not the transformation of the primitive Gospel into Greek metaphysics, the development of something not there from the beginning, but is rather the deepening understanding of what is given once and for all. Theological reflection, both in antiquity and today, must continually return to the Word delivered to us in the beginning. (Fr. John Behr)
