Egyptian Paterikon
Edited by monk Filotheu Balan
Published 2012
"The lover of the desert and the truly dispassionate one has embraced the narrow way, the way full of hardships that leads straight to the eternal life, the way avoided by many foolish ones. And he always ignores the easy and sweet [way] that leads to damnation, the broad and wide way which he idle ones choose. The lover of peace and the lover of solitude does not endeavor to bring bad fruit, but beautiful and good ones, which are good food for any wise man. For he loathes corruption as it is fuel for the eternal fire.
The quiet one, the lover of solitude, the peaceful one, although he avoids people for the sake of the Lord, will never cease to testify to his faith and confess it by his words and deeds, and he is thus the most brilliant preacher, as one who by his good deeds proves that the faith he has acquired is alive, deep in his heart.
The silent and quiet one obeys the One who commands: «Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, take My easy yoke upon you and my light burden and you shall find rest unto your souls». And, in brief, the greatest and the best, the lover of solitude and the lover of peace and the meek one is not only a disciple and follower of our Saviour, but also a true brother and fellow-traveller of Him.“
The present edition of the Paterikon contains the text translated by blessed Paphnutius the Teacher and printed in the year 1828, merging the age-old experience of the Church with the flavor of a matchless Romanian language. The text was translated and carefully completed, according to the Greek original, using the best editions and was enriched with brief presentations of the Holy Fathers’ lives, icons of many of them, and annotations that facilitate the understanding of the terms, as well as a concise concluding text on the history of the Paterikon.
You are holding a book which has endured for a millennium and a half, through the Holy Spirit, which has enlightened, saved and sanctified all those who opened its pages, and testifies to the durability and beauty of any endeavour pleasing to God.
