Faros, Philotheos, Rev.
Dialogue in Orthodox Psychotherapy
Translated from Greek by Rev. Serban Tica
The issue of communication is one of the most serious consequences of sin, and is dramatically presented in the story of Babel Tower. The conscious or unconscious feeling of our personal debasement makes us afraid to discover and trust our fellow people, because we fear that, if they see us as we really are, they will reject us. So we build defense walls around ourselves, we weave smoke curtains and codify the messages we convey to others. The one who understands the matter of communication will ignore verbal expression and directly answer the essential message.
The quality of psychotherapy depends on the quality of the psychotherapist, which in its turn depends on the quality of his humanity – this ineffable ray of divine love which has pierced the darkness of human selfishness. The priest must learn certain techniques, as this too can be a token of love, but he must never forget that his pastoral results are in direct proportion with the degree of his sincere love for the person appealing to his heart. And the psychotherapist who finds that the answer to this question lies not in psychiatric treatises, will hopefully overcome prejudice and turn to theology, too. (Rev. Philotheos Faros)
