Desert’a communion versus city’s loneliness by Moses the Hagiorite, monk Moses the Hagiorite, monk
Desert’a communion versus city’s loneliness

Translation from Greek by Rev. Victor Manolache
Published 2011

Loneliness is the impossibility of real communication, the impossibility to start and maintain a relationship, a bond with the others. Contemporary civilization and the present-day community structures lead to social estrangement, to an isolation policy, to personal loneliness. Thus, from young age people feel burdened by the lack of power and meaning, live without ideals and rules, are constantly doubtful and suspicious.
The dialogues contained in this book will hopefully be significant to the contemporary man, attempting to escape the confinement of his self, the bondage of his passions, his cruel loneliness, the maze of thoughts, the constant discord, the restlesness caused by God’s silence…
The desert and its saints might provide the answer to those willing to receive it, desiring more than the dangerous self-sufficiency of weekly churchgoing and almsgiving. Knowledge of one’s self and one’s fellow people lead to knowledge of God. Prayer and ascetic struggle are essential. Giving up one’s passions is prerequisite, since it purifies the soul and adorns it with virtues, so that it may receive the divine gifts and revelations.
