Depression as vice and illness
Translated from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
The aim of this book is essentially to argue that a great part of the depressive states are entailed by a sinful way of life, the result of the destructive action of sin on the human soul. This applies mainly to neurotic depressions which, as shown in the book, are related to the sinful vices of sloth (akedia) and despondency.
There is also a type of depression that develops “naturally” and is not directly related to spiritual causes. It is an illness that requires specialized medical treatment.
The book contains various counsels of an Orthodox doctor, and suggests faith, repentance and living in compliance with God’s commandments as healing means.
