Christ’s legacy. What the Gospels left out
Translation from Russian by Nadejda Stahovski
What has Christ bequeathed to us after His ascension to heaven? Grossly oversimplifying, one might endorse the Protestant opinion, that Christ has left the Bible to the people. In the Roman-Catholic view, He has left to the world the Pope, Christ’s successor. According to the Orthodox experience, He has bequeathed Himself to us.
Is Christ’s activity in history limited to the Bible alone? May we assert that He keeps working in history? If so, how is this? These very questions arise every time we attempt to tackle an old, famous theological debate, started over half a millennium ago, between Protestants and Roman-Catholics: the controversy concerning the Scripture-Tradition relationship.
The Orthodox are convinced that the Gospels do not contain everything Christ communicated to the people. There is also the Holy Tradition, as well as the Church’s oral traditions. What do they tell us, which attitude should we have towards them? Might there have been some „secret tradition” for the truly spiritualized Christians, a tradition not contained by the Bible’s canonical books, accessible to all? What did Christ tell people, that has not been included in the pages of the Bible?
On all these – the present book. (Andrei Kuraev)
