Ascetical Writings
Translated from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
A luminous star on the firmament of Russian and universal sainthood, staretz Nil Sorski is a spiritual writer whose texts must be presented to those interested in Orthodox spirituality. A director of monks and hesychast father, St. Nil was a skilled advisor through his life and works. His ascetical writings provide us with a treasure of spiritual literature, a synthesis of the patristic teachings on the life in Christ, describing the stages of sin’s impact on man, offering practical methods to fight passions, and placing watchfulness and the prayer of the heart at the core of monastic struggles.
The author impresses us with his modesty and discernment, virtues evinced by his entire corpus of works.
“As the Scripture says that people are strangers and exiles on earth (Hebrews 11,13) and after death follows the eternal life and either rest or torment, as God repays us all according to our deeds, we must concern ourselves with the afterlife. Therefore I offered the present book to my brethren, for the salvation of myself and those seeking it, directing the conscience to the good things and protecting it against idleness, vices, and the evil of sinning, and the people who only think of bodily matters, and the vain and deceitful teachings, who come from the enemy and deceiver of all, as well as our own indolence.” (St. Nil Sorski)
