Teophan the Recluse, St.
A Spiritual Psalter, or Reflections on God - excerpted by Bishop Theophan the Recluse from the works of our Holy Father Ephraim the Syrian
Translation from Russian by Adrian Tanasescu-Vlas
Issued 2011
The most beautiful prayers of St. Ephraim the Syrian, given Psalm form by St. Teophan the Recluse
Just as St. David is essentially a psalmist among prophets, St. Ephraim stands out as a man of prayer among the Holy Fathers. This Father can be rightfully called the Psalmist of Christendom. Alongside prayers, the Psalms contain dogmas, history, ethics. All these can be also found in the present book, which contains prayers selected from St. Ephraim’s writings, according to the number of Psalms. Each prayer has different contents. An attentive reader will note that, despite the apparent monotony of style; however, even those who may find some prayers monotonous should read them without feeling bored, just as the ones who do not enjoy praying never get bored of repeating countless times: “God, have mercy!” or “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!”
We truly hope that whoever opens this Psalm Book will find what they need for their state of mind: advice, spiritual humility, inspiration, comfort or encouragement. May the Lord grant us these, for the prayers of our Holy Father Ephraim the Syrian. (St. Teophan the Recluse)
